  • Personal reflection: This was my first online class I ever took in my college career.  It was a big challenge for me to learn to study on my own and take test online.  Overall the course reinforced and built on my experiences as an LPN and increased my knowledge of nursing.

Parent Newborn Nursing N30010

  • Personal Reflection: I learned that being a male student nurse in OB is tough and probably more challenging than another course for most men.  Not only do you have to learn the material but also have to deal with a mainly dominated sub group of nursing that is mainly women.  Men are not generally in the OB field and I know it is not a field that I am interested in, for the future.

  • EBP: Process Paper
  • Special Experiences:  Pediatric ER, NICU, Community Health Teaching
  • Personal Reflection:  I got to do a PED's rotation when I was going for my LPN, but it was nowhere as intense as my rotation as a student RN.  I had a great time and really enjoyed the clinical, it was difficult dealing with children, and you have to learn to use your other assessment tools to understand what the child is telling you.  It’s not like you can just ask a child the same question you would an adult so you have to adapt your technique when dealing with children.

  • Competencies: Developed an understanding of the basic concepts of nursing informatics.  Understanding of the legal, ethical and economic issues related to safeguarding clinical information.  Use of information technology and terminology related to nursing informatics.  Utilization of these technologies in the nursing environment.  Use of nursing informatics to promote quality patient care.
  • Personal Reflection: This class brought me into the light about using technology with nursing to achieve a common goal of the best outcome for the patient possible.  I never informatics existed in nursing, and since I do like using a computer and technology it may be something for me to review in the future.

  • Personal Reflection: The class focused on the adult patient and different illness that a person can have.  This clinical took place on the oncology unit and was often a sad place to be.  Not only were many of the patients on the floor oncology patients receiving chemo or radiation, but may also be hospice or palliative care.  I have to give any nurse credit that can work on an oncology floor I know it is not for me and truly believe it takes a special person to work on that floor.

  • Personal Reflection: This clinical let me experience a patient that is in an acute critical illness and distress.  It opened up the door for me to learn to use my critical thinking in a real setting and experience the critical care side of nursing.  It allowed you to see the pathological side of the illness progressing and what can happen if the patient goes south or improves.

Community Health Nursing NURS40020

  • Competencies:  Clinical experience in stat cares, home health care, hospice care, cancer center, jail, and community assessment.

  • Personal Reflection:  This clinical was nice because I was never in the same spot more than two weeks and got to see different community sides of nursing that are not as common as working in a hospital or nursing home.  It showed other aspects of nursing in the community. I got to see a wide range of people in the clinical setting and learn who the nurses dealt with each situation.

Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health Nursing Care NURS40030

  •  Competencies:  Self-awareness journals, Bio psychosocial assessment, interacting with patients, group discussion, understanding the metal illness and their signs and systems and therapeutic interventions and treatment.

  • EBP:  Therapeutic Impact of Exercise on Psychiatric Disease, Exercise for Depression, Biopsychosocial Assessment which identified nursing diagnosis for a specific patient assigned at the beginning of the semester.  Journals of the progress and experiences learn observed in clinical setting.
  • Personal Reflection:  The class was a look into a specific division dealing with mental ill patients.  I learned how to interact and deal with these patients with trial and error.  It was a learning experience and the most important piece of information I learned from this class is the therapeutic communication between the nurse and the patients.

  • Personal Goals:  My goal for one year after graduation is to pass the NCLEX and acquire a place of employment in an area of nursing that is interesting and comfortable for me where I can make a difference.  The 5 year goal would be to either decide to continue my education after having 5 years of experience of nursing or to just continue as a registered nurse and possibly move up the ladder eventually to a charge or clinical manger position.
  • Personal Reflection:  I liked the idea of creating professional resumes in the class and getting feedback on what to add or change to make an eye catching resume.  I liked that we got to teach a topic in the class it made me learn the material I was presenting and gave me insight on a topic I really did not know too much about.  Especially since it dealt with what was currently going on in the country at this time.  I believe I did increase my writing skills and further my knowledge of writing APA papers.

Integration of Leadership and Management in Nursing NURS40045:

  • Competencies:  120 of working on a Telemetry unit taking care of 4-5 patients with an experienced preceptor, learning to read telemetry strips, electronic charting in a new computer system, hanging IV antibiotics, drawing blood from a central line, working in a team with other nurses on the floor, IV starts,  and participating in codes and rapid responses.
  • EBP:  60 Hour Journal, 120 Hour Journal
  • Patient Teaching:  Explanation of new medications or antibiotics to patients and family members.  Educating the patient about calling for help before getting out of bed to prevent falls.  Not much education could be done on midnight shift.
  • Personal Reflection:  I liked the time I did get to spend with my preceptor and felt welcomed and trusted by the staff.  The patients on this floor ranged from any type of illness or disease you really had to have a broad understanding of different patients and scenarios that could be transferred or develop on the floor.  I had a hard time being on midnights and feel it did affect my sleep pattern and daily life.  I got through it but in the end I do not believe I could do midnights it is not for me.  I had a good time and learned many new ideas and techniques to use in my practice as I prepare to start my career as a registered nurse.
